Syria Bars Women from Defense and Security Colleges
Original: Syria: Women Barred from Defense, Security Colleges
Human rights organisations, including Human Rights Watch and Genocide Watch, report that women in Syria are being barred from enrolling in the country's defense and security colleges. The exclusion has drawn criticism as discrimination under the new authorities and raises concerns about women's rights in post-conflict Syria. Observers are calling on Syrian authorities to guarantee equal access to public institutions and education.
Why now: Rights groups have just flagged the policy as discrimination against women in Syria's changing political landscape.
