Every candidate for UN secretary-general faces a veto, says diplomat
Original: All contenders for UN chief receive veto: diplomat
A diplomat says every contender in the race to become the next UN secretary-general has attracted the threat of a veto from a permanent Security Council member. The claim highlights how the opaque selection process lets the five veto-wielding powers quietly block candidates they dislike. With campaigns underway to succeed António Guterres, observers are questioning whether any consensus candidate can emerge.
Why now: The selection of the next UN secretary-general is underway and the reported blanket vetoes spotlight the Security Council's power over the outcome.
