Sudan reaffirms Abyei claim as new chief takes office
Sudan has reiterated its claim over the contested Abyei region as a new traditional chief takes office there. Abyei sits on the border between Sudan and South Sudan and remains disputed despite a 2005 peace agreement that gave it special status. The reaffirmation of sovereignty at the moment of a leadership change is likely to draw attention from both countries and mediators.
Why now: The timing of Sudan's statement alongside the new chief's installation in a long-disputed border region has put Abyei back in the news.
