Avi Loeb proposes extending his scale to extraterrestrial AI
Original: Extending the Loeb Scale to the Search for Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence (SETAI)
Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb has published a proposal to extend the Loeb Scale, his 0-to-10 rating system for assessing whether an object or signal could be evidence of alien technology, to a new field he calls SETAI: the Search for Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence. He argues that if advanced civilizations create artificial intelligence, detecting machine minds rather than biology may become the more likely form of contact, and the scale should reflect that.
Why now: Loeb's unconventional claims about alien life regularly draw public attention, and this adds a provocative new twist about AI rather than biological extraterrestrials.
