Experts vote to abolish the leap second
Original: Experts have voted to stop adding extra seconds to clock time – the outcome favours big tech # Time # LeapSeconds # BigT
Metrology experts have voted to stop adding leap seconds to Coordinated Universal Time, ending the practice of occasionally inserting an extra second to keep clocks aligned with Earth's rotation. Critics say the change, favoured by large technology firms, removes an adjustment long valued by astronomers and standard-keepers, while supporters note that leap seconds have caused outages and technical problems for digital systems.
Why now: The decision to scrap leap seconds is a major change to global timekeeping with contested implications for tech companies and science.
