Scientists have filmed a rare Magnapinna, or bigfin squid, deep in the Pacific Ocean, capturing footage of a creature with distinctive long 'elbowed' tentacles that is almost never seen. A researcher involved said she recognised it instantly from the shape of its arms and screamed with excitement before the whole animal came into view.
Why now: Bigfin squid are among the least-seen large deep-sea animals, so any new footage is a major event for marine science.
