Gray brocket deer's secret latrines reveal hidden forest messages
Original: Secret latrines of the gray brocket deer reveal hidden forest messages
Gray brocket deer, small forest-dwelling animals of Central and South America, are reported to maintain secret communal latrines that function as information hubs within the forest. By repeatedly returning to the same spots to defecate, the deer apparently leave chemical signals that convey messages to other animals. The story has drawn attention for showing how much hidden communication unfolds in tropical forests, with readers fascinated that such modest, elusive animals quietly structure the information flow of their environment.
Why now: A newly reported biological finding about how an elusive deer species communicates has captured public curiosity.
