New Jazz Album Sets Shakespeare's Sonnets to Music
Original: Jazz Album Review: Shakespeare’s Sonnets — Jazzed and Sometimes Overwrought
A new jazz album interpreting Shakespeare's sonnets has drawn a mixed review from The Arts Fuse, which praises the jazz treatment of the material while finding some arrangements overwrought. The record joins a long tradition of composers setting Shakespeare's poetry to music, and its blend of literary source and improvisation is prompting discussion among jazz and poetry audiences alike.
Why now: The album's unusual pairing of Shakespeare's sonnets with jazz invites debate about whether the treatment elevates or overburdens the poetry.
