Kartal falls short in Wuhan Open final against Chwalinska
Original: Sonay Kartal misses out on maiden WTA 1000 title in Wuhan Open final defeat to Maya Chwalinska
British tennis player Sonay Kartal was beaten in the final of the Wuhan Open by Poland's Magdalena Frech's compatriot Maya Chwalinska, denying her a first WTA 1000 title. Kartal, enjoying a strong run in the tournament, was unable to convert her run into a maiden crown at the elite-level event in China. The defeat ends her best showing yet at a 1000-level tournament, though her breakthrough season continues to attract attention.
Why now: Kartal's run to a WTA 1000 final is a career-best achievement that has drawn fresh attention to a rising British player, and her defeat in the title decider is major news in the tennis world.
