Rome Congress Told Humanitarians Are Europe's Last Face in the Sahel
Original: Rome Humanitarian Congress: “Humanitarians are becoming the last human face of Europe’s engagement in the Sahel” (Dr. Bakary Sambe)
At a humanitarian congress in Rome, Dr. Bakary Sambe of the Timbuktu Institute warned that aid workers are becoming the last human face of Europe's engagement in the Sahel. His remark reflects growing concern that as European political and security involvement in the region recedes, humanitarian actors are left carrying the burden of the international presence amid worsening instability.
Why now: Europe's shrinking security and political role in the Sahel is shifting responsibility onto humanitarian organisations, a concern now voiced publicly at an international congress.
