New Film 'Whalefall' Puts a Diver Inside a Sperm Whale

Original: In the New Movie 'Whalefall,' a Cetacean Swallows a Diver Whole. The Sperm Whale's Remarkable Anatomy and Feeding Habits

The upcoming film 'Whalefall' centers on a diver swallowed whole by a sperm whale, a premise drawing on the real anatomy and feeding habits of the species. Coverage, including by Smithsonian Magazine, examines how sperm whales' enormous throats and squid-hunting dives make the survival thriller plausible enough to fascinate audiences and marine scientists alike.

Why now: The film's unusual premise has prompted scientists and writers to explain the real biology of sperm whales.
