Trump endorses Netanyahu ahead of Israeli election
Original: Trump endorses Netanyahu for reelection
Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's upcoming election, urging Israeli voters to back the longtime prime minister. The intervention is drawing attention because of Trump's close ties to Netanyahu and the sensitivity of a foreign leader weighing in on a democratic vote, with reactions split along political lines and renewed focus on US-Israel relations.
Why now: A former US president openly backing a foreign leader in an active election campaign is unusual and politically charged.
