Legendary ocean liner to be sunk off Florida coast
Original: Longer than the Titanic, it was built in secret and carried Hollywood stars – now this legendary liner is being sent to the bottom of the ocean
The SS United States, the ocean liner longer than the Titanic and built partly in secrecy as a fast troopship that later carried Hollywood stars across the Atlantic, is being prepared to be deliberately sunk off the US coast. Reports say the ship will become the world's largest artificial reef, closing a chapter on one of America's most storied vessels.
Why now: The decision to scuttle a beloved historic liner has sparked debate over the loss of a national maritime landmark.
