El Salvador to release tens of thousands of prisoners
Original: el salvador
El Salvador is preparing to free tens of thousands of people, according to GZERO Media's 'Hard Number' feature. The move marks a major shift from the mass incarcerations carried out under President Nayib Bukele's crackdown on gangs, which drew international criticism for sweeping up alleged gang members with limited due process.
Why now: The mass release is a dramatic reversal of El Salvador's hard-line anti-gang imprisonment policy, drawing wide attention.
