Conte and Schlein embrace at rally, vow alternative government

Original: conte

Former prime minister Giuseppe Conte and Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein appeared together at a public square rally in Italy, embracing and telling supporters they are working to build a political alternative to Giorgia Meloni's government. The joint appearance by the two main opposition leaders is being read as a signal of closer coordination between the Five Star Movement and the centre-left ahead of future elections.

Why now: The public show of unity between Italy's two main opposition leaders fuels speculation about an alliance against Meloni's government.
