Hobbyist builds working 16-bit DIY magnetic core memory
Original: 16-bit fully functional DIY magnetic core memory
A maker has built a fully functional 16-bit magnetic core memory array at home, reviving the storage technology that powered mainframe computers in the 1950s and 1960s before semiconductor RAM took over. The project demonstrates that individual ferrite cores can still be wired and driven to store bits reliably, and it is drawing attention from engineers and retrocomputing fans impressed by the craftsmanship involved.
Why now: People are fascinated by a hobbyist successfully recreating obsolete vintage computing hardware from scratch.
