Rome congress: Europe urged to rethink its role in the Sahel
Original: Rome Humanitarian Congress : “ Europe must not disengage from the Sahel, but play a different role, rethought role” (Dr. Bakary Sambe)
At a humanitarian congress in Rome, Dr. Bakary Sambe, who leads the Timbuktu Institute, argued that Europe must not disengage from the Sahel but instead adopt a rethought, different role in the region. His remarks come as several European countries have scaled back their presence in the Sahel amid coups, rising insecurity and shifting partnerships with other powers, prompting debate over the future of international engagement there.
Why now: Ongoing withdrawal of European forces and influence from the Sahel is renewing debate over what role Europe should play in the region.
