A call is circulating for the European Union to make large-scale investments in French satellite operator Eutelsat to build an alternative to dominant foreign satellite internet providers. Supporters argue Europe has both the knowledge and the money to do it, and should simply act. The debate reflects wider concern in Europe about technological dependence on non-EU providers for strategic communications infrastructure.
Why now: Ongoing EU debate about European strategic autonomy and reducing reliance on US satellite services like Starlink
