India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said countries must make their own choices and protect their own interests, a message directed at an international audience amid ongoing strategic jockeying with China. The remarks sit alongside reported comments from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the same diplomatic stage, prompting discussion in India about how New Delhi is positioning itself between major powers.
Why now: Tensions and diplomatic exchanges between India and China are keeping statements by both governments in the spotlight.
