Physicists who identified a third form of magnetism, known as altermagnetism, have been awarded a major physics prize. The discovery challenges more than a century of established thinking, which held that only ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism existed. Altermagnetism combines properties of both and could shape future computing technologies, drawing wide interest from the scientific community.

Why now: The prize award has brought fresh attention to a discovery that upends long-standing physics and promises practical applications in computing.
