Ocean sanctuaries proposed to protect leatherback turtles
Original: ‘Ocean sanctuaries’ could keep leatherback turtles out of danger zones
Conservationists say creating designated 'ocean sanctuaries' could help keep leatherback turtles away from danger zones such as fishing areas where they risk being caught as bycatch. The proposals, reported by Euronews, highlight how protecting key migratory and feeding grounds at sea could reduce threats to the critically endangered species, which continues to decline despite existing protection efforts on nesting beaches.
Why now: New reporting on ocean sanctuaries as a tool for protecting endangered leatherback turtles is drawing attention to marine conservation.
