Two new subterranean fish species discovered
Original: Two new-to-science subterranean fishes reveal a hidden world underneath
Scientists have described two previously unknown species of subterranean fishes, adding to the growing list of species found living in groundwater habitats hidden beneath the surface. The discovery highlights how little is known about underground aquatic ecosystems and the unique, often blind, creatures that evolve in them. Researchers note such finds underscore the need to protect fragile aquifer habitats from pollution and over-extraction.
Why now: Discoveries of new species, especially from hidden underground habitats, capture wide scientific and public interest.
