Original: Sportswashing the Racing Circuit: Rwanda and Formula One
Rwanda is pursuing a place on the Formula One calendar, with its bid for a Grand Prix in Kigali drawing criticism that the country is using motorsport to launder its international image. Critics argue hosting a race would help the government deflect attention from its human rights record, while supporters see it as part of Rwanda's push to position itself as a global events and tourism destination.
Why now: Rwanda's efforts to host a Formula One race are prompting renewed debate about sportswashing and the ethics of expanding the sport into new countries.
