Bessent says Europe has paid Russia more than Ukraine

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed Europeans have given Russia and Vladimir Putin more money than they have given Ukraine, accusing them of continuing to buy Russian energy and questioning why the United States should act alone on the war. The remarks drew wide attention, with critics pointing to Europe's large financial and military aid to Ukraine and defenders echoing calls for Europe to shoulder more of the burden.
Why now: Ongoing debate over burden-sharing in Western support for Ukraine amid continued European purchases of Russian energy.
