Albertans vote in referendum on separating from Canada
Original: alberta referendum
Albertans are voting in a referendum on whether the province should leave Canada, a ballot that has drawn comparisons to a self-styled 'Switzerland of North America'. The vote taps into long-standing western discontent with Ottawa over energy policy, taxation and federal regulation. Commentators warn a yes vote would trigger a constitutional crisis, while separation supporters argue Alberta's oil wealth would sustain an independent state.
Why now: Albertans are actively voting on separation, making it a live and consequential political event.
