Indonesia trials dry ice to disperse toxic wildfire haze
Original: indonesia dry ice haze trials
Indonesia has dropped 2,400kg of dry ice in an attempt to disperse thick haze from wildfires that have burned over 1.9 million hectares this year. Fire hotspots quadrupled to 1,104, disrupting 2,458 domestic flights, and haze has reached Jakarta and Singapore. President Prabowo Subianto called a meeting on the crisis, while Singapore's K. Shanmugam rebuked an Indonesian official's 'oxygen' remark but welcomed Jakarta's efforts.
Why now: Transboundary haze has worsened sharply, prompting unusual mitigation experiments and diplomatic friction between Indonesia and Singapore.
