Vatican upholds excommunication of US deacon over son's abuse case
Original: Vatican upholds excommunication of US deacon who resigned after son was molested by priest
The Vatican has upheld the excommunication of a US deacon who resigned after his son was molested by a priest. The decision, reported by The Guardian, has drawn attention to how the Catholic Church treats whistleblowers and victims' families in abuse cases. Critics see the move as harsh punishment for a man who spoke out rather than for the priest responsible.
Why now: The case reignites debate over the Catholic Church's handling of clerical sexual abuse and its treatment of those who challenge it.
