Lost Arctic Sandpiper Spotted in Israel's Negev Desert
Original: Lost Arctic Sandpiper Spotted in the Negev
Birdwatchers in Israel's Negev desert have reported sightings of an Arctic sandpiper, a species that should be thousands of kilometres from the region. The bird's appearance far from its normal migration route between the Arctic and southern wintering grounds has drawn attention from ornithologists and enthusiasts, who see it as a rare vagrant sighting and possibly a sign of disrupted migration patterns.
Why now: A bird usually found in the Arctic appearing in a desert is a rare and striking vagrant sighting that excites the birdwatching community.
