Researchers say suspected Amelia Earhart plane find is likely trees

Original: Possible wreckage of Amelia Earhart's plane likely to be trees, say researchers

Researchers say an underwater object suspected of being wreckage from Amelia Earhart's lost aircraft is most likely trees. The finding ends hopes that the detection might finally solve the mystery of the aviator's 1937 disappearance over the Pacific during her attempt to fly around the world, a case that has fuelled searches and theories for decades.

Why now: A hoped-for breakthrough in one of aviation's greatest mysteries has been ruled out, rekindling debate about Earhart's fate.
