A newly shared retrospective on Stanley Milgram's infamous obedience experiment is drawing renewed attention. The study found ordinary people willing to administer what they believed were painful electric shocks when instructed by an authority figure, a result the account describes as 'jaw-dropping'. Commenters are revisiting what the findings reveal about conformity, authority and moral responsibility, and how they apply to current political and social behaviour.
Why now: People are re-examining the classic study's warnings about obedience to authority in light of today's political climate.
