Princess of Asturias Awards begin in Oviedo with Messi and Patti Smith

Original: premios princesa de asturias

The Princess of Asturias Awards ceremonies are under way in Oviedo, with the King and Queen arriving with their daughters, including Princess Leonor, who debuts in a solo engagement. Footballer Lionel Messi and singer Patti Smith, both honoured this year, are drawing the biggest crowds, though Messi is reportedly not scheduled to speak and will leave early. Smith has already charmed locals, meeting bagpipers and young fans.

Why now: High-profile laureates Messi and Patti Smith plus Princess Leonor's first solo appearance are drawing wide public attention in Spain.
