UN Adopts Equal Earth Map Projection
Original: A Fair World Begins with a Fair Map: The UN Adopts Equal Earth Projection
The United Nations has adopted the Equal Earth projection as its standard world map, moving away from distorted representations like Mercator that exaggerate the size of Western countries and shrink Africa and South America. Advocates describe the change as a step towards a fairer visual representation of the world, arguing that maps shape how people perceive the relative importance of regions.
Why now: The UN's endorsement of a more geographically accurate map projection is being seen as a symbolic correction of historical cartographic bias.
