Japan set to launch MMX probe to Mars moons tonight
Original: Noch heute Abend soll in Japan die Raumsonde MXX zu den beiden kaum erforschten Monden des Mars starten, Phobos und Deim
Japan is preparing to launch the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft tonight, sending it to Mars's little-studied moons Phobos and Deimos. Aboard is Idefix, a small European lander, and the mission is expected to collect samples from Phobos and return them to Earth. German-language science commentary is highlighting the launch as a rare look at two largely unexplored bodies in the solar system.
Why now: The mission's launch window opens tonight, making it a timely space event for international observers.
