Bear killings rise as trash and bird feeders lure them into towns
Original: Bear killings skyrocket as garbage, bird feeders draw them into conflict
Wildlife officials in the United States are reporting a sharp increase in bears being killed as unsecured garbage and bird feeders draw the animals into residential areas. Easy access to human food brings bears into repeated conflict with people, often forcing authorities to euthanize animals that become habituated. Reports from outlets including Westword and Stateline highlight the trend and renewed calls for residents to secure attractants.
Why now: Reports of rising bear deaths tied to human food sources are prompting public discussion about wildlife management and household responsibility.
