October 19 is celebrated as Piauí Day, commemorating the Battle of Jenipapo in 1823, when fighters from Piauí and neighbouring provinces confronted Portuguese forces during Brazil's independence war. Commentary revisits the battle as a defining moment showing that independence was fought for in the Northeast, not merely declared, and highlights figures like João Cândido de Deus e Silva in regional historical memory.
Why now: The Piauí state holiday prompted renewed discussion of the region's often overlooked contribution to Brazil's independence.
