Scientists urge ethical debate before Mars terraforming begins
Original: Who speaks for Mars? Scientists call for ethical debate before terraforming begins
Scientists are calling for a global ethical debate over who should decide the fate of Mars, arguing that any effort to terraform the planet raises unresolved questions about planetary protection, scientific value and governance. Writing in the scientific press, they say humanity should settle who speaks for Mars before technologies capable of altering the planet's environment become realistic.
Why now: Renewed interest in Mars exploration and human settlement plans has pushed questions of planetary ethics into mainstream science discussion.
