Scientists vote to abolish the leap second
Original: Scientists vote to end leap seconds, redefining how the world keeps time
Metrologists have voted to scrap the leap second by 2035, ending the decades-old practice of occasionally adding a second to Coordinated Universal Time to keep atomic clocks aligned with Earth's irregular rotation. The decision, welcomed by tech companies that suffered outages from the adjustments, will redefine how the world keeps time, with experts still working out how to handle the growing gap between atomic and astronomical time.
Why now: The abolition of leap seconds is a landmark change to global timekeeping that affects technology, science and daily life.
