NASA Watchdog Urges Overhaul of Decadal Surveys
Original: NASA IG Calls For Decadal Survey Reforms
NASA's inspector general is calling for reforms to the decadal surveys, the influential once-a-decade reports that set priorities for astronomy and planetary science missions. The recommendation, reported by Aviation Week, suggests the process for shaping the space agency's long-term science agenda needs structural changes. Details of the specific reforms have not been widely reported yet, and the finding is drawing attention within the space policy community.
Why now: Decadal surveys guide billions of dollars in NASA science mission planning, so an inspector general call for reform has significant implications for future missions.
