Chicago-Area Cops Helped HSI Spy on Minnesota Anti-ICE Activists
Police in the Chicago area reportedly assisted Homeland Security Investigations in surveilling activists in Minnesota who oppose ICE operations. The report has drawn attention to cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, and to concerns that monitoring of activists may chill First Amendment-protected protest activity. Critics say cross-state surveillance of political organizing raises serious civil liberties questions.
Why now: Concerns over civil liberties and federal-local cooperation in immigration enforcement are highly topical.
