Ecclesiastes Called the Bible's Most Disturbing Book

Original: Ecclesiastes: The Bible’s Most Disturbing Book

A viral discussion is framing Ecclesiastes, one of the wisdom books of the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament, as the Bible's most unsettling text. Commentators point to its bleak refrains — that everything is 'vanity' or vapor, that wisdom, pleasure and toil all end in death — which challenge simple readings of divine justice. Readers are debating whether its pessimism is disturbing or the most honest book in scripture.

Why now: Renewed online debate over the book's bleak philosophy of vanity and mortality is drawing large audiences to discussions of its meaning.
