Calgary Opera replaces singer after Palestinian flag display at Tosca curtain call
Original: cbc calgary
Calgary Opera has replaced tenor Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega in its production of Tosca after the singer displayed a Palestinian flag during a curtain call. The company's decision has drawn attention as arts organizations face pressure over political expressions by performers, with reactions divided between those supporting the opera house's stance and those criticizing it as censorship.
Why now: The firing touches on the ongoing controversy over pro-Palestinian expression by public figures and institutions' responses to it.
