Birds ranked among Earth's key nutrient movers
Original: Birds are among Earth's most important nutrient movers
New coverage highlights that birds play a major role in moving nutrients across the planet, transporting phosphorus and other elements between ecosystems such as oceans, wetlands and land. Seabird colonies in particular are said to fertilise distant habitats through droppings. The report argues that declining bird populations could disrupt these vital nutrient flows with consequences for ecosystem health.
Why now: Fresh research coverage emphasising birds' ecological role is drawing attention amid concerns over declining bird populations.
