Original: Japan Launches MMX Mission to Mars's Moon Phobos - Two Planned Landings and a Sample Return https:// arstechnica.com/spa
Japan has launched its Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft on a mission to Phobos, the larger of Mars's two moons. The probe plans up to two landings on Phobos and will collect samples to return to Earth, aiming to reveal whether the moon is a captured asteroid or debris from a giant impact on Mars.
Why now: The mission's launch is a major milestone in Mars exploration and only the second attempt to return samples from the Martian system.
