Donald Trump has said that "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine," drawing sharp backlash. Historian Anne Applebaum responded by pointing to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, mass killings, rape and the kidnapping of children, sarcastically calling those actions "all fine." Critics are seizing on the remark as evidence that Trump is downplaying Russian atrocities and softening the US position toward Moscow while the war continues.
Why now: Trump's remark contradicts widespread documentation of Russian war crimes in Ukraine, prompting strong criticism.
