Singapore moves on haze law, ASEAN defence and nuclear energy
Original: 新加坡
Singapore is in the news on several fronts. Defence Minister Chan Chun Sheng attended the ASEAN defence ministers' meeting, voicing support for an ASEAN-US defence cooperation framework ahead of Singapore's chairmanship next year. The government is also summoning to move next week to amend the transboundary haze pollution law, calling in ten companies suspected of links to forest fires, while the Singapore Exchange presses listed firms on ties to fire-linked companies. Separately, the government has appointed consultants to study nuclear energy, and HDB is soliciting ideas to cool and speed up flat construction.
Why now: A cluster of significant government announcements on haze legislation, regional defence cooperation and nuclear energy has drawn attention in Singapore this week.
