Social unrest spreads across Europe over energy prices and housing
Original: Italy, Spain, Belgium, Portugal: Social unrest spreads across Europe amid soaring energy prices and a housing crisis
Protests over the cost of living are multiplying across Europe, with Italy, Spain, Belgium and Portugal joining France in street demonstrations, some of them violent. Italian workers have been called to a general strike on November 20, while similar mobilisations are planned in Spain on November 11, as soaring energy bills and a housing crisis fuel public anger.
Why now: Rising energy prices and housing costs are driving coordinated strikes and protests in several European countries at once.
