Original: MWI Podcast: Forty Years of Goldwater-Nichols
The Modern War Institute has released a podcast episode marking forty years since the Goldwater-Nichols Act, the 1986 law that reorganised the US Department of Defence, strengthened civilian control, and formalised the joint command structure. The discussion examines how the reform reshaped military careers and inter-service cooperation, and what lessons it offers for debates over defence reorganisation today.
Why now: The fortieth anniversary of the landmark 1986 defence reform has prompted renewed discussion of its legacy and relevance to current military organisation debates.
