Nuclear Bomb Fallout Left a Clock Inside Whale Teeth
Original: Nuclear Bomb Fallout Hid a Clock Inside Whale Teeth
Fallout from 20th-century nuclear weapons testing left a distinctive radiocarbon signature in the ocean, and scientists found it recorded in whale teeth. Because the 'bomb pulse' has a known timeline, the carbon layers in whale teeth act as a built-in clock, letting researchers determine whales' ages far more accurately than older estimates allowed.
Why now: New research shows bomb-test carbon traces can be used to date whales' ages precisely.
