Islamic scholars urge Iran's Supreme Leader to revisit nuclear weapons fatwa
Original: Islamic World Elites Request to the Supreme Leader for a Review of the Nuclear Weapons Fatwa
A group described as Islamic world elites has publicly asked Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to review his fatwa on nuclear weapons. The appeal, reported by Taghrib News, calls for reconsideration of the religious ruling that currently bars the acquisition or use of such arms. The request touches on one of the most sensitive questions in debates over Iran's nuclear programme, where the fatwa has long been cited as a binding religious obstacle.
Why now: Renewed international scrutiny of Iran's nuclear programme is putting the Supreme Leader's nuclear weapons fatwa back in the spotlight.
