Flock surveillance cameras spread through deals bypassing public scrutiny
Original: Flock cameras spread through government deals that bypassed public scrutiny
Flock Safety's automated license plate reading cameras have been installed in hundreds of US cities and towns through contracts signed by local officials with little or no public debate, an NBC News investigation reports. Critics say the company's aggressive sales tactics and quiet government deals have built a nationwide surveillance network tracking drivers' locations without residents' knowledge or consent.
Why now: An investigation into how the surveillance network expanded without public oversight has renewed debate over privacy and local government transparency.
